Sometimes an idea arrives quietly.
A thought comes while you are praying. A sentence forms while you are going about your day. A story begins taking shape in your heart, or you suddenly feel drawn to create something you have never created before. It can be easy to dismiss these moments as ordinary thoughts. But sometimes, creativity can become a way of expressing the gifts, experiences and wisdom God has placed within us.
Creativity Can Have Purpose
God has given each of us different abilities. Some people communicate through writing. Others create through music, art, design, storytelling, teaching or encouraging others. Your creativity does not have to look like someone else’s to have value. The important question is not simply, “Is my idea good enough?”
A better question may be:
“How can I use what I have been given for something meaningful?”
When creativity is connected to purpose, even a small idea can encourage someone, communicate truth or bring hope into another person’s life.
Don’t Wait for Everything to Be Perfect
One of the greatest obstacles to creativity is waiting until we feel completely ready.
We may tell ourselves:
I need more experience.
Someone else can do it better.
What if nobody likes it?
What if I fail?
But many meaningful things begin imperfectly.
The first page may need rewriting. The first design may need changing. The first song may not sound exactly as you imagined. That does not mean you should stop.
Growth often happens while we are creating.
Pray, Create and Keep Going
When an idea remains on your heart, bring it before God.
Ask Him for wisdom. Ask Him to guide your motives and help you recognise what is worth pursuing. Then take a practical step.
Write the first paragraph.
Record the first note.
Sketch the first idea.
Begin the project.
You don’t need to see the entire journey before taking the first faithful step.
Scripture: “Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” — Proverbs 16:3
Your creativity can be more than something you do. It can become a way of sharing hope, serving others and expressing the purpose God has placed within you.
So when inspiration comes, don’t automatically dismiss it.
Pray about it. Write it down. Develop it. And give yourself permission to begin.
What idea have you been carrying that you haven’t started yet?
Perhaps today is the day to take one small step.
